Fish Distribution Survey Report FY 2005
Holden B. 2005. Fish Distribution Survey Report FY 2005. Redwood National and State Parks
Excerpts: "The purpose of this report is to summarize the results from the distribution and status surveys of threatened and non-listed salmonid species within Redwood National and State Parks during the FY 2005 field season. A 12-volt DC battery backpack electroshocker was used to evaluate the presence and distribution of different fish species in each tributary and identify potential barriers to anadromous migration. Fork lengths of fish were measured to the nearest millimeter. Specific conductivity was measured with an YSI model no. 33 salinity-conductivity-temperature meter. Water temperature was measured in the stream with a hand held thermometer. During the period of July 6th to September 1st of 2005, the Fish and Wildlife staff surveyed twenty watersheds within Redwood National and State Parks.... During the survey period, salmonid species within Redwood National and State Parks were captured and measured; coho salmon, steelhead trout, coastal cutthroat trout, and cutthroat and steelhead crosses 'Hybrids.' Other non-salmonid fish and amphibian species captured is presented." Includes introduction, methods, survey sites, results, map of RNSP, conclusions, recommendations, maps of study sites, acknowledgements, and references. Recommendations state: "All species detected were known to occur in the streams sampled. It is recommended that more extensive surveys occur in the following years to determine the actual distribution, range and status of listed and non-listed fish before any final statement concerns the presence or absence of threatened and non-listed salmonid species be made with confidence." Includes a table of salmonid fish survey results: site, number specimens captured, date, species, mean fork length, standard deviation, and range of lengths in millimeters. Another table shows presence of captured non-salmonid fish and amphibian species by watershed.
