Freshwaters in large areas of northern Europe and eastern North America that today lie in and adjacent to the areas in which precipitation is most acidic are threatened by the continued deposition and further expansion of acid precipitation. Many of these freshwaters are poorly buffered and vulnerable to acid inputs, These ecosystems appear fated to suffer acidification, loss of fish populations and disturbance of other vital ecosystem components and processes.
