U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 8 is contemplating removal of contaminated sediments and major portions of Milltown Dam. Elements of the remedy selection process include protectiveness, implementability, and cost. A number of critical data gaps exist concerning the physical and chemical properties of contaminated sediments and groundwater (pore waters) that could significantly impact these selection process elements. Some of these properties may also apply to remedial design, but are best collected at this time since they are related to the selection process elements. The purpose of this data collection process is to provide the additional necessary information to EPA, the State of Montana, the potentially responsible parties (PRPs), and other stakeholders to improve the related decision making process.
