The study for this report began as a response to the Federal Highway Administration's multi-decade road construction project in Yellowstone National Park. In order to meet the compliance needs of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as Amended in 1980 for this project, the author was asked to survey and evaluate the historic resources related to the road system. She felt very strongly that this document should serve more than just compliance needs, thus the idea for Part 1 of a Historic Resource Study for the Park. This study provides detailed historical information covering nearly 100 years of road construction in Yellowstone National Park. In addition to the history of road construction in the Park, the study also provides Cultural Resource Management information in regards to the significance of the roads and bridges. This valuable information will assist park managers in planning the changes to the road system as part of the Federal Highway Administration's multi-decade road construction project.
