This paper presents a detailed study of the history of the vegetation in Morristown National Historical Park, NJ. Evidence suggests that in the 18th century a mesic red oak-chestnut forest covered the lower slopes, a more xeric oak-hickory forest covered the upper slopes, and forest openings vegetated with light-demanding species were common. Starting in 1740-1750, areas were cleared. In 1937, furthur land-use changes were halted by the establishment of the park. A series of map included maps trace this history. A topography of strong relief and a history of diverse use have combined to creat a mosaic of landscape within a small area.
