During rainfall, increased stormwater flow flushes the accumulated material in the sewer lines into Jamaica Bay, where relatively low current velocities produce little subsequent flushing. Microbiological degradation processes occurring under anaerobic conditions in the sludge mounds produce hydrogen sulfide and likely also methane and carbon dioxide. In all cases, the hydrogen sulfide concentrations were less than the detection levels (<1 ppm) of the analyzer tubes used. There appears little chance of a public health risk unless levels rise above 10 ppm for prolonged periods. However, hydrogen sulfide odors are readily noticeable in much lower concentrations, so aesthetic reasons alone may be sufficient for removal of CSO mounds.
