Forecasting analyses of sanitary water quality conditions in Jamaica Bay indicated that reduction of combined sewer overflow (CSO)coliform loadings by about 90 percent will provide for compliance with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Class SB standards for coliform bacteria. Analysis of water quality model calibrations and dissolved oxygen simulations in Jamaica Bay indicate that algal photosynthesis and respiration, as well as sediment oxygen demand (SOD), are the sources and sinks which mainly control dissolved oxygren concentrations within the bay. Thus, complete abatement of CSO biological oxygen demand loading will not provide for comliance with the NYSDEC standard of never less than 5.0 milligrams per liter. Water body modifications investigates, including Kennedy Airport removal and opening a 500-foot-wide second inlet from the ocean, will not substantially improve water quality in the bay.
