Structural Characteristics of Grasshopper Sparrow Habitat
Whitmore RC. 1981. Structural Characteristics of Grasshopper Sparrow Habitat. The Journal of Wildlife Management. 45(3):811-814
Surface mining reclamation procedures have created large tracts of grassland that have potential for use by grasshopper sparrows, whose numbers have declined in West Virginia, according to data from Breeding Bird survey routes. This study indicates that grasshopper sparrows prefer for their territory areas that are more sparsely vegetated and have lower values for all variables dealing with grass, forb, shrub cover and vegetation height.
