Colorado squawfish were tracked by radiotelemetry to spawning grounds, and migration was documented from both directions toward the mouth of the Yampa River in Dinosaur National Monument, and to a site in Gray Canyon of the Green River. This was the first documentation of long-distance migration by fish moving only within a river system. Odor appears to be the primary attractant to the spawning sites. As reproductive success may be dependent on long-distance migration to prime sites, man-made obstructions may have important consequences. Introduction of hatchery-reared squawfish may interfere with survival of imprinted native fish able to reproduce successfully, and could contribute to a decline of the species rather than prevent it.
