This report details characteristics of hunters and hunting (such as success rates, transportation, hunt duration, and residency) in the Wrangell-St. Elias region between 1 July 1973 and 30 June 1977. It is based on harvest reports and sealing certificates in the files of the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game. Nine species were studied: caribou, moose, mountain goat, Dall sheep, bison, brown bear, black bear, wolf, and wolverine. An average of 2,237 individuals hunted ungulates each season, with 31% of the harvest being Dall sheep. Hunt locations were coded in relation to the U.S. Dept. of the Interior's recommended boundaries for the proposed Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve.
