Describes geologic history of the basaltic volcanic island Tutuila , American Samoa. The main period of subaerial volcanism is estimated to have occurred during a short period (approximately 0.6 Ma) in the Early Pleistocene. Pago, the major shield volcano, was built between 1.54 and 1,28 Ma ago. The smaller volcanoes, Olomoana and Taputapu were created during the same approximate period. Youthful Manu'a islands show a rate of migration of about 10cm/yr which are consistent with a hot spot origin for the volcanoes. Includes a map of geological features of Tutuila. Tables list isotopic age data on whole rock samples from Pago, Olomoana, and Taputapu volcanoes.
