Fire alone may not make a prairie, but fire properly used can help maintain it. Burning at approximately four-year intervals is justifiable to prevent stagnation of growth and productivity due to excess mulch. Every prairie does not need to be burned. Grazing and/or mowing can also be useful, and these alternatives should be considered where wildlife is a concern.
