As part of a three-year study to inventory montane-nesting birds within the National Park Service’s Southwest Alaska Network, we conducted surveys within Lake Clark National Park and Preserve from 14–29 May and 9–12 June, 2004 and Katmai National Park and Preserve from 11–25 May, 2005. We deployed three, two-person crews to survey 22 and 23, 10- x 10-km plots in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Points were allocated in proportion to ecoregion type, and crews conducted a total of 379 point counts in 2004 and 382 point counts in 2005. Data summarization of the 2005 field effort is on-going, but in 2004 crews detected 105 species in Lake Clark overall, including 2,472 individuals of 86 species detected during active survey periods. The most commonly detected species were Golden-crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia atricapilla; 238 individuals), Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis; 154 individuals), and American Tree Sparrows (Spizella arborea; 150 individuals). In addition, several species that are montane-nesting specialists (e.g., Surfbird (Aphriza virgata), Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch (Leucosticte tephrocotis), Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe)) were detected at low rates. Data from the surveys will be used to predict presence/absence of species by ecoregion and habitat, and calculate park-, ecoregion-, and habitat-specific bird densities.
