A small, low cost current direction recorder was developed and tested. It records the net time that currents flow from each of eight compass directions. Current direction is sensed via an external vane connected magnetically to a rotating contact set and recorded by one of eight digital watches inside a water proof perspex (transparent acrylic) housing which is turned off by the placement of the vane. The Current Direction Meter (CDM) assesses and records the prevailing current regime in a localized region, making it ideally suited for ecological studies. Test performance data are reported for field trials in Pioneer Bay, Orpheus Island (Australia) over 21 days in March 1990.
