Obligate Cave Fauna of the 48 Contiguous United States

The authors assembled a list of obligate cave-dwelling species and subspecies, their county distribution, and their provisional global conservation rank. This list includes a total of 927 species and 46 additional subspecies in 96 families exclusively from cave and associated subterranean habitats. Species are found concentrated in northeast Alabama, Kentucky (Edmonson County - which includes Mammoth Cave National Park), Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. Tables provide cumulative numbers of and rankings of troglobites, stygobites, and single-county endemics in the 48 contiguous states of the United States, with comparisons between number of caves and number of described species and between years (1960 and 1999). Figures reflect these findings on maps of the United States. Vulnerability and conservation implications are discussed.
