The Flood Factor in the Ecology of Caves

Hawes RS. 1939. The Flood Factor in the Ecology of Caves. Journal of Animal Ecology. 8(1):1-5

Observations on the effects of annual flooding on cave ecosystems. A cave in Herzegowina is used as an example of the possible need for this annual flooding in proper maintenance of ecosystem factors. These factors include: the source of a circannual rhythm in an otherwise unchanging habitat, the source of an annual influx of food, and the means by which epigean organisms are able or are forced to colonize caves.
