This paper discusses efforts to reduce visitor impact within Mammoth Cave, KY by constructing a prototype walkway along a portion of the Historic Section of the cave, particularly along Houchins Narrows, the Rotunda, and a segment of Broadway. The walkway needed to address four primary resource impacts: the use of cave sediments to repair existing cave trails, dust reduction, reduction of lint and other foreign material, reduce the opportunity to leave new graffiti and/or remove cave 'souvenirs'. Trail logistics and concerns are detailed and discussed. Material selection for two different types of walkways is justified with costs provided. Logistical information on the physical construction of each walkway is also detailed. Results are examined and recommendations are made for future projects of this nature.
