This study was primarily initiated to observe the effects riparian manipulation, or phreatophyte control, had on the wildlife in the Verde Valley using a breeding bird study as an indicator. An additional objective was to determine which birds are exclusively dependent upon native riparian vegetation and thus would be affected by future thinning in existing riparian stands by the water salvage and flood control agencies. Finally, it is hoped that sufficient data will be collected so that agencies involved in riparian manipulation may determine to what extent, if any, they can manipulate the riparian habitat in the Verde Valley without seriously altering the breeding bird populations and their species diversity.
