Age determination of various subspecies of cutthroat trout has posed a problem for fishery workers in the West for many years. Recognition of annuli has been somewhat more difficult than in trouts forming larger numbers of circuli, and obvious discrepancies have appeared when workers attempted to relate numbers of annuli to actual ages. This difficulty has resulted in a general tendency on the part of biologists to avoid reading cutthroat trout scales. No other method of aging this species has been explored extensively.
