Inventory of the terrestrial mammals of Coronado National Memorial, Cochise County, Arizona.

Using techniques of small mammal trapping, infrared-triggered photography, road transects, observations, and inspection of current and historic records, we documented the presence and distribution of terrestrial mammals at Coronado National Memorial, Cochise County, Arizona. During this study we confirmed, through voucher specimens, photographs, or reliable observations, 43 species of native terrestrial mammals. Confirmed species included one marsupial, one insectivore, two rabbits and jackrabbits, 23 rodents, 13 carnivores, and three hoofed mammals. We discuss an additional 18 species of mammals that may be present but were not confirmed during this study, or occurred at the Memorial in the past but probably no longer occur. We provide databases for all mammal records at the Memorial, as well as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) locations of grids, cameras, and sightings where available. Finally, we discuss threats to mammals at the Memorial, and propose an approach for long-term monitoring of mammals at Coronado and other similar U.S. National Park areas.
