Herpetology of the Gila and San Francisco River drainages of southwestern New Mexico

Southwestern New Mexico provides a rich assemblage of reptiles and amphibians with at least 75 species known from the area drained by the Gila and San Fransico rivers. This report summarizes the distribution of these species and provides a bibliography of over 540 literature citations pertinent to their systematics, life histories and ecology. This study was initiated to gain an insight into the diversity of the herpetological community of southwestern New Mexico which is surpassed by few regions of equal size in the United States. Given the remoteness and vastness of much of this region and the rarity of some species which occur there, the biology of several species, e.g. Rana yavapaiensis, R. chiricahuensis, Gyalopion canum, and Elaphe triaspis, has not been studied adequately to provide herpetologists with the basic life history informaiton to assist in management programs. Such studies as would provide this information need to be initiated.
