Grazing use is the major factor affecting range conditions. The chief criterion for detecting and evaluating trend in range condition is change in species composition. Since quantitative data on the course of such change in Flint Hills bluestem grassland have not generally beeen available, a study of the effects of different grazing treatments on the vegetation and on the livestock was initiated in 1949 on typical bluestem range to provide such data.
