Gopherus

Grant C. 1960. Gopherus. Herpetologica. 16(1):29-31

The genus Gopherus has been separated from Testudo by various structural differences, habits and isolation. No generally accepted definition seems to exist at present. Three species of Gopherus inhabit the southern United States and northern Mexico, but they are not clearly distinguished in the literature. Lack of data assembled from museums, the field and zoos accounts for this. A brief summary of the divergent views of a few writers illustrates the present confusion.
