Some Measures of Uniformity in Vegetation Analysis

It is pointed out that most measures of uniformity or homogeneity in vegetation analysis can be predicted if the mean number of species per unit area or sample and the index of diversity, a parameter expressing the increase in total number of species sampled as a function of area or number of samples, are known. A new index of uniformity is proposed, defined as the ration between the mean number of species per sample and the index of diversity. The relationships between the index of uniformity and other measures of floristic similarity or homogeneity are discussed and the results applied to some of the data recently published by Curtis.
