The method of illustrating ecological and geographical distribution to be described in this article was devised to illustrate a work on the distribution of American butterflies, now in preparation. It will be impossible to complete the entire article for considerable time to come, but as the method is generally applicable to studies other than this one, I have decided to illustrate it by means of this short article.
