Observation of food choices of tame ungulates has proven to be a useful technique for obtaining quantified information on diet selection. Procedures for rearing various ingulates have been discussed (Murphy 1960, Trainer 1962, Youngson 1970, Reichert 1972, Buckland et al. 1975, Schwartz et al. 1976). This paper discusses some special considerationsin rearing and training Rocky Mountain elk ('Cervus canadensis') for food habit studies.
