Vegetation Zones of Mexico

The present classification and map (fig. 1) of Mexican vegetation was compiled as part of a survey of the wildlife resources of Mexico. The objective has been to divide the country into natural biogeographical units, thereby simplifying consideration of the problems of wildlife distribution and wildlife conservation. No attempt is made to critically define the structure of individual plant communities or the ecological affinities of the several communities included in each major zone or type. That is a task for the plant ecologist. The present classification, though crude, is yet accurate enough to satisfy many practical needs. No similar map of equal accuracy and detail is currently available.
