...Natural areas play a crucial role in the rapidly changing landscape. Most important, perhaps, is that they serve as bench marks, for assessing the extent of man's impact upon deverse land, lake, river, estuary, and coastal enviroments. In this article, I define natural areas, as they are currently envisioned by many scientists; examine some of the forces that have advanced or opposed natural areas as a basis for policies of land use; and discuss what uses can be made (5) of the unique kind of scientific information they contain.
