Artificial reseeding of range lands is usually not applied to ranges in fair condition, and is largely confined to badly depleted areas. Samples from conservatively grazed, and severely overgrazed ranges were used to study seedling establishment. The area included the Page Range, about 30 miles north of Tucson, Arizona, and adjacent outside range; the Page Ranch is representative of the protected desert grassland vegetation. Two questions were considered in this study: (1) what are some of the effects of soil hardness and vegetation upon overgrazed and protected range soils on establishment of grass by broadcast seeding; (2) what is the comparative fertility of the two soils as determined by pot tests?
