...Recently a study of the construction of the chelonian skull has been undertaken. During observations on the nature and the fate of the lateral arcades certain very interesting facts have come to light. That these arcades beautifully illustrate the laws of arch and truss construction is without doubt. Variability in form and composition however has been observed to be very remarkable indeed.
