...The research program of chaparral burning, when initiated in 1925, included the recording of certain physical effects that burning has on the soil. The results of this study are here reported under three headings: soil erosion, infiltration capacity of the soil; and soil-moisture relations. Although no claim of finality is made of the data presented, the results are significant; they should prove useful to persons managing or operating areas where the natural cover is subject to sudden decimation by fire or by other agents. Also the paper may stimulate further research into the intricate and diverse effects of burning, on both soil and vegetation.
