This is an early look at hybridization in oaks of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, based on field work and examination of herbarium specimens. Given the common occurrence of hybridization between oak species in the United Stated, hybridization between species in Mexico would be expected , yet it is virtually unreported. In Chihuahua there are perhaps more than 30 'good' species of oaks, 10-15% of the total mumber in Mexico. Excluding the complex and widespread intergration between Quercus arizonica Sarg. and its relatives, we have discovered at least 16 putative hybrid combinations. Some are uncommon and sporadic. Quercus basaseachensis Muller is believed to be an example of such, formed from the combination of the distantly related Q. ruqosa Nee X Q. depressipes Trel. Other species more broadly belongs to such a series of intergrades detween Q. emoryi Torr. and Q. coccolobi floia Trel.
