For various typed of investigations, it is desirable to intervals of a week and occasionally for time periods as short as one day. The machinist's dial gauge is a precise instrument which Reineke (1932) used to measure the radial growth of a 'precision, dendrometer.' Daubenmire (1945) has made a recent improvement on the dial guage adaptation which has been used by Brown et al. (1947) in a silvicultural experiment on the Harvard Forest... It is the purpose of this paper to present some data indicating the variable rate of radial growth at any particular height above the ground on the tree bole which reduces the effectiveness of the adapted dial gauge. itself a precise measuring instrument, as a dendrometer
