During the spring of 1935, the flow of the Colorado River was first brought under control, and the vast reservoir behind the dam began to fill rapidly. For a time, when the flood waters of spring were pouring down the river, the surface of the reservoir rose a few feet every twenty-four hours. In the course of a month or so vast areas, formerly desert, were submerged. Temporary islands were produced; mouths of washes became lagoons.
