Estimations of populations of brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) in urban habitats have generally been poorly founded. Errors of several hundred per cent may not be serious in the planning of control operations, but refined techniques are necessary for population and ecological studies. The present paper attempts to describe and evaluate censusing procedures used in conjunction with ecological and control studies conducted in Baltimore, Maryland, during the years 1943-1946.
