Two-year old saguaro seedlings posess crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM). Carbon dioxide uptake occurs at night with release during the light period. With a rise in temperature dark C02 uptake is significantly reduced. The combination of water-storage tissue and CAM may contribute to the success of these large succulents in the Sonoran Desert.
