Arceuthobium is a morphologically reduced genus of angiospermous parasites occurring Pinaceae and Cupressaceae. We are presently completing a monographic treatment of the genus, and this paper formalized a number of new taxa and combinations used in our monograph. We also present a synopsis of our new classification of the genus. The taxonomic basis for the new and recombined taxa, as well as their relationships, will be discussed in detail in our monograph, which will be published as a U.S. Department of Agriculture Handbook. We have not repeated detailed imformation here, but a few comments in addition to the Latin descriptions are included for the new taxa. The significant changes in the present system of classification from the last treatment of the genus in the United States by Gill (Trans. Connecticut Acad. Arts Sci. 32: 111-245. 1935) include: (1) the elevation in rank of Gill's host forms, (2) the addition of a number of new species, and (3) the first subgeneric, sectional, and series classifications attempted in the genus. A few commonly used synonyms are included.
