Despite numerous reports of desert fishes thriving in hypersaline waters, there are only two studies of their osmoregulatory response to high salinities. This note reports preliminary findings on salinity tolerance of a pupfish, Cyprinoden milleri, endemic to hypersaline pools in Death Valley, California. During summer a high evaporation rate subjects the pupfish to severe osmotic stress as well as aberrant ion ratios in the external medium. The osmotic tolerance of C. milleri is examined here and compared to work on closely related species.
