About mercury: its uses, dangers, and concerns over it. The amount of mercury released annually by man is about 104 tons compared to 108 tons in the oceans. Thus it is considered that levels in marine fish are not affected by human activities. Hazard from mercury, apart from local contamination, appears to be to animals at the top of fresh-water food chains. Chromosomal damage remains to be fully elucidated.
