Although some species have been hunted into extinction, the major cause of extinctions has been the destruction of natural habitat. One of the purposes of the United States Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, is 'to provide a means whereby the ecosystems upon which endangered species and threatened species depend may be conserved.'
