This article contains results of a preliminary evaluation of effects of the 1992 Hurricane Andrew on the freshwater aquatic habitats of Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park, Florida. Topics include impacts on surface water hydrology and water quality, fish and macroinvertebrate communities, and such wildlife species as alligators, colonial wading birds, and other birds (Bald Eagle, Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow). With maps of the affected area and sampling stations, tables of water quality and other data, color photographs of periphyton mat, sampling, alligator nest. The concluding section stresses the need for additional research, with specific suggestions, and the introductory paragraph notes that the short (10-day) assessment pointed out significant gaps in long-term data sets which limit understanding of effects of such disturbances.
