Tree Age and Dominance Patterns in Great Basin Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands

Pinyon-juniper woodlands, Pinus monophylla and Juniperus osteosperma, were studied for tree age, dominance, and density at eighteen sites in California, Idaho, Nevada, and Utah. All study sites were located in the Great Basin portion of the Basin and Range Province. The loss of understory, coincident with increasing tree dominance, has reduced forage production and made the woodlands progressively less susceptible to fire.
