An attempt is made in this paper to : (1) specify the location of individual species of the redwood region along environmental gradients of moisture, soil nutrients, light, and temperature; (2) to analyze the distribution of recognizable vegetation patterns along these gradients; (3) to develop simple numerical indexes requiring no field measurements other than a listing of species present in a vegetation sample or stand to position that sample along environmental gradients in relation to other segments of the vegetation. Gradients were quantified.
