The basic principles of 'association-analysis' have already been described in earlier communications (Williams & Lance 1958; Williams & Lambert 1959, 1960). In the ecological examples of its application so far discussed, the raw data have been in every case the presence-or-absence of individual species in a number of quadrats; the species represented are correlated in all possible pairs, and the properties of the resulting speciescorrelation matrix are used to subdivide the quadrats into groups. This procedure we designate 'normal' association-analysis.
