A phytosociological study of the 'pinyon-juniper association' in the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains was initiated in September, 1951 and ended in August, 1953. Two field trips totalling over 16,000 miles in four states were undertaken for the collection of data by the first-named author, one during the summer of 1952 and the other during the spring of 1953. Twenty-four representative stations were analyzed for comparing the community characteristics of pinyon-juniper stands throughout the eastern range of this type except in the extreme northern portion.
