This article includes a preliminary evaluation of the effects of Hurricane Andrew on selected plants and animals occurring in upland pine forests, hardwood hammocks, and associated freshwater swamp forests (cypress forests and bayheads) in Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, and Big Cypress National Preserve. It also discusses the spread of exotic vegetation. Field observations were conducted both on the ground and by helicopter. The report includes sections describing the red-cockaded woodpecker, Florida panther, white-tailed deer, American swallow-tailed kite, south Florida tree snail, and the Schaus swallowtail butterfly. The article contains photographs depicting the damaged caused by the hurricane.
