In a thought-provoking paper, Raikow (1986) attempted to apply the concept of "key adaptations" to the question of why passerine birds (order Passeriformes) have so successfully radiated into the largest avian order. Among other hypotheses, he considered and then rejected the thesis that the evolution of a complex syrinx and the widespread occurrence of vocal learning and dialect formation among passerines have contributed significantly to the diversity and numerical dominance of the group.
