This investigation relates to the need for Death Valley National Monument to expand water supplies. The paper discusses the recharge area (largely outside the Death Valley hydrologic basin), and effects of withdrawing water. The author concludes that if water is collected at Furnace Creek by gravity-feed, not pumped, little effect to groundwater is likely. Background information includes a description of the area and its environmental conditions (with precipitation graph, geologic maps and cross section, water analyses). The author also notes that man-made changes to the drainage system have changed characteristics of Furnace Creek Wash and the alluvial fan, with further changes likely to affect vegetation on the fan.
