The world wears a belt of mangrove forests. Nearly impenetrable thickets where trees grow in saline water and mud, they are . the salt marshes of the tropics. Nearly 75 percent of the coastlines between latitudes 25 degrees north and 25 south are dominated by the many species known collectively as mangroves, and like. the tropical rain forests whose fate tends to dominate the environmental news, they are gaining the attention of scientists even while in some parts of the world they-are being destroyed at a fearsome rate.
