This report documents the results of the first year of habitat-based landbird monitoring in the Northern Colorado Plateau Network, which the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory completed in 2005. In 2005, the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (RMBO) initiated year one of the NCPN long-term land bird monitoring protocol. The protocol is similar to other RMBO monitoring programs, as delineated by Panjabi et al. (2001). The overall goal is to provide statistically rigorous long-term trend data for populations of most diurnal, regularly breeding bird species in the NCPN. Short term goals are to provide information needed to manage and conserve bird population in the NCPN, including the spatial distribution, abundance and key habitat characteristics for each species. Long term goals are to support the NCPN’s efforts for long term bird monitoring and to contribute to RMBO’s broader landscape-scale breeding bird monitoring program. This includes 11 states in the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains regions. For the NCPN parks monitored, 45 point-count transects were established; 15 each in low-elevation riparian, pinyon-juniper and sage shrubland habitats, with the intent to conduct the transects two times every year. While 2005 was the pilot season, all transects were established, with a total of 1333 point counts conducted. 2005 results yielded a total of 119 breeding bird species on point-count transects in the three habitats. The habitat-stratified data provided robust results (CV of <50% in at least one habitat) for 36 bird species, and moderately robust results (CV of 50-75% in at least one habitat) for 9 additional species.
